Lloyd Dyer: Quiet Passion, Drive & Flair… By Simon Mack !
In the summer of 2014 Lloyd Dyer left Leicester City Football Club. After a 10 year absence from the top flight the club had just achieved promotion to the top flight and the enigmatic winger had played a huge part in the club’s return but despite a 1 year extension to the 31 year olds contract being offered he departed and it left a sense of sadness for me that the player never got his chance to shine on the big stage.
Lloyd had joined the foxes from MK Dons in 2008 after a 2 year spell at Stadium MK and the quiet man from the West Midlands had begun his career at West Bromwich Albion before moving onto spells at Coventry, QPR and Millwall amongst others before setting down at the Foxes and playing the lion’s share of his football for city.
Signing for a free Lloyd was Nigel Pearson’s second signing as Pearson joined Leicester from Southampton and began to formulate the foundations of the squad that repaired the damage on Filbert Way and Dyer was straight into Pearson’s first league eleven in a 2-0 victory over his former club MK Dons.
The foxes number 11 played down the left flank under Nigel Pearson for 2 spells along with Sven-Goran Eriksson and the brief tenure of Paulo Sousa and whoever was at the helm no one could fail to be impressed by Lloyd’s passion and drive for the team. Dyer left the club in the summer of 2014 despite a 1 year extension being offered in preference for a 3 year deal at Watford siting the security of a longer contract as his motivation although it did not work out for him in Hertfordshire and spells at Birmingham and Burnley followed before he settled back in the midlands at Burton Albion.
When I think of Lloyd I remember the smile he’d often bring to my face with his exciting forward forays and goals so I thought a few of his best and most significant goals for the club might blow away the football cobwebs and bring back from fond memories…. Enjoy!
Lloyd’s first goals for the foxes away at Cheltenham Town in a 4-0 rout in 2008. Not too shabby from Fryatt and Oakley either!
As the foxes ran away with the Championship 13/14 season on a bumpy St Andrew’s pitch Lloyd comes up with the goods…..
The goal that sealed the Championship title against Bolton 22nd April 2014. What a strike!
And the goal cam…
Probably his best season in a city shirt this is a decent look back at Lloyd’s 13/14 Championship title winning season:
He’s not too shabby on FIFA 11 either!!:
Lloyd Dyer foxes appearances: 265 Goals: 39
