Leicester’s Next Signings – by Scott Bentley
It’s that time of year again. We all know who we want, we’ve all spotted players overseas that could do a job and we’re all arguing back and forward on facebook groups. Truth be told though, with Jon Rudkin in charge and with last seasons 14 Second Saga with Adrien Silva it’s all just a guessing game. Our signings in recent years have came from various schools of thought from the exciting prospects in the French lower leagues to seasoned veterans closer to home or players the manager has experience with. I think a great policy to bare in mind is the Premiership vulture around the relegated sides and the debut season Harry Maguire has just had is evidence of its success.
West Brom, Stoke City and Swansea City have all went down and their players should be available for a cut price. I’m not saying these are ALL players we should immediately sign or even players I definitley want but they are all worth consideration..
JACK BUTLAND
Probably the prize asset on the relegated market, it’s hard to believe Butland has lasted this long at Stoke. At only 25 years old he looks set to be on the plane to Russia and probably the strongest contender to be England’s number 1. Relegation will do nothing to harm his reputation but it’s almost certain he’ll be leaving Stoke. Unfortunatley for us having Schmeichel and Butland in the same squad just wouldn’t work financially or competitivley. Both are too good to warm a bench and at only 31, Schmeichel is by no means past his best. Butland – right player, wrong time.
A combative and energetic forward that fights for every ball. Sounds just like a Leicester player doesn’t it? After signing for West Brom for 12 million in 2015 he’s gone on to play over 100 times for them scoring 25 goals and he’s always been a handful in games against us. 25 goals in 3 years may not seem fantastic but his build up way and physical prescene would cause problems for any defense if paired with a pacey striker like Jamie Vardy. In January there was an offer of over 30 million on the table from China and he stayed. Rumour has it he is now available for 15 million which seems a bargain compared to the price we paid for Islam Slimani.
A 12 million pound release clause for an ex Bayern Munich and Inter Milan playmaker… sign him up. Shaqiri has probably been the only entertainment Stoke fans have had in the last few years. Very similar to the figuire Mahrez imposes at City he can go 88 minutes doing nothing then pop up with a moment of magic to win a game. I’m not saying we should be signing another guy with no work rate, tempo or commitment but football is an entertainment sport and there will be a void left if Riyad goes. I for one wouldn’t mind seeing the Swiss international taking players on in a City shirt.
Very similar to the Harry Maguire logic, Mawson is a young english defender with the world at his feet. Since the famous Huth and Morgan duo we’ve struggled for a real concrete partnership at the back and Mawson in my opinion is the ideal signing. Similar again to Maguire, Mawson seems confident with the ball at his feet and only 24 he has plenty of pace.. Unlike Wes now. He’s 6ft 2 and great in the air for corners. Price rumours have varied but for the 20 million mark this would be great business.
JONNY EVANS
A name we heard all last season.. if we don’t go with Mawson this could be another route to take. It seems certain Evans will leave WBA and it doesn’t look like Arsenal or Man City are interested any more. Although Wes hasn’t had a great season we will miss his experience if he does take more of a back seat going forward. Evans would come in with a high number of premiership games under his belt and the maturity to command a back line. It may not be a long term signing but it would only benefit the players around him.
Once regarded as the future first choice England centre back, Shawcross career has went a bit quiet. It’s possibly because he’s stuck with the most boring team in the country since 2007. In this time he hasn’t done anything catastrophical but also hasn’t made headlines with anything fantastic. A good and fairly solid centre back may be exactly what we’re looking for and another product of the youth system at Manchester United wouldn’t be a bad thing. It’s worked for Simpson, James and Drinkwater so far.
MAME BIRAM DIOUF
Very fast and very direct. We seem to be fond of speedy strikers and we’ve been linked with Diouf more than once. I wouldn’t be surprised if we spend the summer chasing him and get the deal done at the last minute.
A Few other players “Worth thinking about?”
