It’s now or never, a reaction is needed.
Leicester vs Gillingham match preview by Tom Shapland
Leicester will travel to Priestfield this Saturday at 12.30 PM as they take on League 2 side Gillingham in the third round of the FA Cup. Rodgers’ side will be looking for a serious reaction after losing their last three games, most recently a 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham. Gillingham currently sit at the bottom of the English Football League, being 24th in League 2, an obstacle that should be surpassable for the Foxes, as they play their first FA Cup game of the season.
Form
Leicester will go into this game losing their last three consecutive games, conceding six and scoring two. Rodgers’ side are far from their pre–World Cup renaissance where the addition of Wout Faes seemed to sure up a leaky back line, that is no longer the case. The Foxes currently sit in 13th place in the Premier League, far from fans expectations and will be expecting a win here boosts the team’s confidence moving forward.
Gillingham have only won two games in their 10 outings in all competitions, sitting rock bottom of League Two. Despite this, Neil Harris’ side will be looking to pounce on Leicester’s shaky form and will be hoping to cause an upset. This will be the first meeting between the two sides in the FA Cup and the first in any competition since the 04/05 Championship campaign, where the Foxes won both games 2-0.
Team news
Leicester travel to Kent with nine injuries in the squad so fans may expect a heavily rotated side. Key players such as Maddison, Evans, Justin, Dewsbury-Hall are all included in the nine men out through injury. Rodgers will be hopeful that the club is resourceful in the January transfer window and get in some reinforcements to help them manage in the second half of the season.
Expected line up: Ward, Castagne, Thomas, Amartey, Faes, Ndidi, Tielemans, Albrighton, Barnes, Vardy, Iheanacho
The Gills go into this game with no injuries and a fully fit squad, Neil Harris will most likely name his strongest squad as Gillingham take on their second Premier League team of the season, previously losing 2-0 to Lopetegui’s Wolves in the EFL Cup round of 16.
Expected lineup: Morris, Wright, Tutonda, Mckenzie, Jeffries, Kashket, Williams, O’Keefe, Ehmer, Macdonald, Mandron
One to Watch:
Kelechi Iheanacho is a player that has struggled for form this season, scoring only once in 16 appearances. However, when it comes to the FA Cup, Iheanacho has proven to be a pivotal player. Since his first appearance in the competition in January 2016, the Nigerian has scored more FA Cup goals than any other player (15). 13 of these coming from his 14 starts in the competition, a record he will be looking to add to, and hopefully kickstart his season.
