Arsenal 2-0 Leicester City

The Foxes slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates against a side who are “obliged” to be playing Champions League football according to their manager.

Arsenal took the lead early on. Thomas Partey headed home unchallenged from Gabriel Martinelli’s corner after 11 minutes. This allowed the hosts to dominant early on.

The Ghanian midfielder also rattled the bar as the Gunners pressed for a second. Whilst Harvey Barnes called Aaron Ramsdale into action twice including a great save from a header as Leicester pushed for an equaliser.

But following Çağlar Söyüncü’s handball in the box, it gave Alexandre Lacazette a chance to double their lead. The Frenchman took this chance in the 59th minute.

This gave Arteta his fifth win in a row as they continue to push for the top four. After the game he said: “We have to be there; we should be there. Our history obliges to be there, but we are not there yet and there are still a lot of games to play.”

Arsenal qualified for 19 successive Champions League campaigns from the 1998-99 season onwards and this win listed them into fourth.

Whilst the Champions League is far out of reach for Brendan Rodgers as they are now 18 points of the Champions League spots. They currently occupy 12th place and next face Stade Rennais in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. But their next domestic game is Brentford at home on Sunday.
